Asleep #2

Asleep #2

Apparently, sleeping while (partially) standing up is a new extreme sport. Photographed in an ATM vestibule in Georgetown, this young man is not quite as talented as the previous sleeper, but has a more sensible choice of location. In his defense, it was lightly raining at the time, so standing in the middle of the sidewalk would have been pretty uncomfortable.

I not sure what causes this phenomenon, are today’s youth drinking more than we did in my day, or are they just worse at holding their liquor.

Ivy Covered House

Ivy Covered House

The Georgetown area of Washington D.C. is well known for its upscale shops and 200 year-old rowhouses. While the ivy on this home may not be 200 years old, it’s certainly the predominant architectural feature.

Switchers

Switchers

Railroad switchers in the yard near Nashville’s Union Station. Ok I’ll bite, why is there a Union Station in almost every major city east of the Mississippi?

Nashville WWI War Memorial

Nashville WWI War Memorial

The door lamp and columns in front of the Nashville World War I Memorial. The memorial itself was somewhat odd, consisting of a statue in a relatively large and empty feeling courtyard.

I might have to create a coffee table book of door lamps since I seem to have a penchant for photographing them…

Customs House

Customs House

Built at the end of the 1800’s, Nashville’s Customs House originally held a variety of Federal offices including the courts and postal service. Currently owned by the metropolitan government (a unique concept of joint local and state administration), the Customs House still houses a variety of municipal and federal offices. Originally designed by William Appleton Potter , the Victorian Gothic architecture leaves plenty for a camera to render. Here, I’ve chosen to showcase a bit of the front façade over the main entrance.

Nashville, had an interesting varieties of architecture — Victorian, Egyptian Revivial, and Contemporary vie with each other and a myriad of other styles in an eclectic mélange. I didn’t have a chance to venture out of Nashville’s Centennial Park, otherwise I might have chosen to photograph classic Greek architecture in the form of the full-scale Parthenon replica built there.

A cafe table and chairs just inside the Nashville Shopping Arcade. This photo was inspired by a photo of park chairs by Kertész. It’s not nearly that good, but we all start somewhere.

Sunset on the Mall

A couple enjoys sunset on the National Mall. This image is actually a pretty heavy amount of Photoshop manipulation for me. I’m currently in Nashville for work and caught a cold from the flight here. Hopefully, there’ll be fresh photos from the this trip over the next couple of days.

Little Tavern

Little Tavern

A little something for this week’s Photo Friday Challenge: glow. Sixteen years ago we still had Little Tavern in Washington D.C., and like their counterparts, White Castle and Krystal, they served little square burgers by the bag.

I played my first game of pac-man in the Silver Spring restaurant, and ditched high school in the Wheaton branch. To the best of my knowledge the Georgetown location, pictured here, was the last to close down. This night-time view of that restaurant was a welcome way station for drunken students before venturing home. I snapped this image in 1988 and rotoscoped it for Photo Friday.
