One of our daughters on the way home from school.  I actually made this photo a little over 2 years ago, and I debate whether I should show it in color or black & white.  I ended up significantly messing with it in Photoshop to correct a fair amount of motion blur and missed focus.

Another photo from the first meeting of the Photo Fight Club, Darya in a bit of a glamour shot, and probably the last I’ll post from this shoot.

Here, Darya is lit by a Speedlight high and 45-degrees to camera left and another speed light about head-high camera right, both bounced into a white umbrellas.

From the first meeting of the Photo Fight Club, Darya and her new kitten Benson.  I mostly took this as an exemplar of shooting available light with technique over technology.  And no, that’s not a typo in the Exposure section, I took this hand-held at 1/6 of second.

My friend Dave and his fiancée Jin are getting married this spring. This is a portrait I shot a couple weeks ago as they tried out their wardrobe.  Shot on campus not far from the main entrance.  

We have a speedlight firing into umbrella camera right as the main light source, and a couple others adding fill lighting.

My friend Megan was kind enough to pose for some photos for the Strobist Boot Camp Assignment. After an uninspiring first round, we added the umbrella as a scene prop, and that made all the difference. I made several photos that I liked, including this one. Unfortunately, one of the best shots of the day ended up over-exposed by 3-stops as I set the flash to optimize for Scott’s setup, and I forgot to adjust my camera to match. If I mange to save that one, I’ll post it here for comments.

I have two reasons for uploading this second portrait of Scott.  First, it proves that I can take a more traditional portrait, as opposed to some of my more stylized work.  And second, I get to bump my own mug off the front page.  This photo was about 3 stops under-exposed, and corrected in Photoshop.

An old adage has it that, “the devil himself would make a good sailor, if he could only tie a bowline and look aloft.” I don’t know about the devil, but I’ve rarely had a chance to set foot on tall ships more the less venture into the rigging. But nonetheless here is a view “looking aloft” aboard the full-rig Cisne Branco.
